Ilford Variable Contrast Glossy 5x7.
Dim indoor lighting.

Exposure Data

Well, i was drunk when i took this picture so i don't really remember
too too much about it. I just wanted to take some shots of my friends
being my friends. We were playing poker and i just decided it'd be a
perfect time to get them as themselves. I shot this with my canon
28mm lens, at f2.8 and 1/30s.

Critique

Just any tips on portraits would be great. I'm lucky enough to have
friends like these, but as for photojournalism and documentary photography
i lack the balls for. Any comments on this photo are open and welcome
from exposure to printing, but i guess i'd like some advice about
getting out there and in peoples faces with the camera. It's the part
of my photography that i lack the skill for and would like to give this
a bit of attention and focus so i can build on it.

Well then.
I can comment on gettinig out there and seeing everyday people to take photographs off. Since this is what I loooooooove to do. giving being outdoors. It's easier (i think it is) to think about the lightings. Day time, sunny. most frames will come out good then bad. Figure out the best settings yo uwant for the day, b/c sometimes, you'll see someone, and you need to react fast. Standing there seeting you aperature and shutter will let you miss the chance. I will say, this is where automatic settings do help and with autofocus. personally, I've been trying to stay away from AF.

You must not be shy. Sure some people will be like 'wtf do you think you are doing' .. if you get a look that could turn into something ugly. keep moving. if you are in a busy area, where tourists are common. Those are good areas, b/c most likely people that live there will be use to cameras clicking. Look for interesting character. A guy in a to-to, a man and his lizard (true story there, found a man in harrisburg with a huge lizard) .. those are characters (imo) that are great for street/city life/photojournalism.
I like children, taking their photos, but the parents do get nervous. to be honest, I like how freaked out they get. that's even a more fun photo!
Get a good zoom lens. 008, buckley, ryan buckley.
lemme know if you have any questions from this comment, I'll be happy to get into more detail and examples.

But for this photograph, I did the focusing. Great choice on the f stop.

haha 008. well, there's a carnival coming to town this thursday, maybe i'll give the whole photojournalism thing a shot this weekend. i have a zoom for my Nikon F55, but i've pretty much resorted to only using that for studio work. I have a 105-210 zoom for my M645J...maybe i'll take that out. All in all, it's just about getting out of my shy shell i guess.

once you are out there doing it.
it'll be fun. believe me :)
