Technical Data

Nikon F55 / Nikkor 28-80mm
35mm / Kodak Tri-X 400 ISO (developed in X-Tol 1:1)
Printed on Ilford Variable Contrast Resin Coated
Ilford 5 contrast filter
I forget the exposure but i was fully stopped down to get as much
sharpness as i could

Exposure Data

Metered off my hand in front of the guitar and stopped down one, and
bracketed. Trying different negs to see which would give me my desired
effect in the darkroom.
Zoomed to 80mm to get smallest aperture and to flatten the image as
much as possible.
Used a tripod due to indoor indecent lights and to ensure perfect
sharpness.
Set timer to avoid camera shake, again, to ensure as crisp lines as
possible.

Critique

I'd like to know if the sound hole should get a longer burn time or
would that make the piece seem too abstract?

Similarily, would some dodging at the top where you can start to see
the wood detail coming through hurt or help the image?

Is the light detail on the pick guard distracting or seem to grainy?

Although 400 was all i had available, do you think i should re-shoot
the image with a slower, finer grained ISO?

on this internetimage it looks fine as it is.

try to reshoot it with a slower film. tmax-100 has a high resolution or technical pan, if you can find one !!

then compare the less grainy version with the tir-x print. decide what you prefer ;)

I would have put this under abstract, the forms work really well here if I didnt realize it was a guitar.

I think the film choice wasnt the best, but here it worked in a way. The whites are very unique.

Burning looks fine, you have two extremes here that both seem to work towards a more abstract appearance, with the absence of middle greys.

I think seeing the detail in the wood would really distract here, I think its perfect here with as little grain detail as possible, again in conjunction with the whole abstract appearance.

Its not too grainy either, the guard detail is a bit distracting, but still doesnt hurt the image too much.

Try shooting this with plus x 125 or like above with some tmax film, tmax is great with studio work, especially those whites and blacks with good lighting, try to dilute your developer as well, get that grain to be a smooth as possible in the final print.

Looks wonderful, I really dig this picture.

I think this piece is already abstract, so I wouldn't worry about 'too abstract'. The shapes are really rad.
