Technical Data

Nikon F55 / Nikkor 28-80mm
35mm / Kodak Tri-X 400 ISO (developed in X-Tol 1:1)
Printed on Ilford Variable Contrast Resin Coated
Ilford 5 contrast filter
I forget the exposure but i was fully stopped down to get as much
sharpness as i could

Exposure Data

Metered off my hand in front of the guitar and stopped down one, and
bracketed. Trying different negs to see which would give me my desired
effect in the darkroom.
Zoomed to 80mm to get smallest aperture and to flatten the image as
much as possible.
Used a tripod due to indoor indecent lights and to ensure perfect
sharpness.
Set timer to avoid camera shake, again, to ensure as crisp lines as
possible.

Critique

I'd like to know if the sound hole should get a longer burn time or
would that make the piece seem too abstract?

Similarily, would some dodging at the top where you can start to see
the wood detail coming through hurt or help the image?

Is the light detail on the pick guard distracting or seem to grainy?

Although 400 was all i had available, do you think i should re-shoot
the image with a slower, finer grained ISO?

looks perfect as it is! it's more intrigueing this way, personally, i think it works better if it's not perfectly abstract; if you can still recognise the object, while the vision is so unique, makes it more valuable than an abstract that could be anything.
and the grain gives it more of a rock'n'roll feel anyway :D

Personally I love over the top contrast in photography, traditional photography at least. Congrats on the DD and keep up the traditional art, someone has to before digital kills it.

Filters my friend, a filter on your lense will add to contrast and then during the printing process use a filter to. Red filters add contrast like a number 5 a number 2 filter is nuetral so it wont do anything and a 1 filter is a more yellow so it will flatten your images. The film he used is an iso400 so its just a standard good for most situations film. He most likely had a shallow depth of field which if there was anything in the background made it blurry, by burning the background he was able to make it completely black and dodging the guitar part would help in making it more white. (dodging means not letting as much light if any touch the paper there during printing and burning means exposing sections of the print to make it darker).

a brilliant shot...!
i like it as it is... not sure if a further exposure for the hole would make sens... there's something visible... you can imagine a guitar...

anyway... really really good!

This is a gorgeous and yet simple photo of a guitar. The smooth flowing shapes are really emphasises and are shown off here. It reminds me of the yin yang symbol with the shapes and the strong black and white. The lack of tone helps too, keeping the forms seem more pure. The little touches of tone do help though. I especially like the fact we can still see details and some lettering inside the sound hole so I would say not to burn that in as I think it adds an extra level of interest and depth. I would add this to my favourites right now but I have only just added another Deviation. I will return later though to add this. Congratulations on getting the Daily Deviation for it as well.

Honestly, this is a very nice piece just as it is.
I wouldn't do anything at all to it. The only reason you would want to reshoot it, is for enlargement purposes. If you do reshoot I would suggest using Kodak Plus-X 125 Film. It's one of my favorites.

I thought this was a vector art when I first saw it. Nicely done.
