Technical Data Leica M6 with 35/2 35mm film/Kodak tri-x 400asa (normal exposed), developed in microdol-x (why? dunno) scan from negative, with nikon V coolscan Natural and artifical lighning mixed, ~01:30pm f2.0 @ ~1/250 Exposure Data I've wanted to have a small DOF on the man's face only, because i thought that the dog isn't intresting as an expression but as an element of the whole composition. I set the focus on the face and bend the camera a bit so that his hands were sharp too. Critique What i like is the expression of the man and his hands holding the dog. What i'm not sure about is the lady on the right. Is it distracing from the focus even if the DOF is so small ? I'm not sure if it was good to include her and the baby. A 1/250 might have been too fast for the background, but i wanted to take this shot open at f2.0, so there i had to make compromises. Lady and her baby ? good or not ? should i've used a different aperture and expsoure time ? |

I never really tried developing tri-x in mincrodol, what was the experience like? Always thought it would really irritate the grain structure more than a d-76 or xTol?
First of all it's a fantastic frame, I guess someone could say it's a little dark but I personally think it lends to make the photo more easily viewed.
Especially a scan from negative makes it hard to really understand the structure in black and white, the scanner seems to eat up simple grain structure.
But I like it as dark as it may seem, texture on his jacket is very good, as well as the backround racks and such, so that is really cool!
I just get a sense of something horrible about to happen. Just as the scene looks ordinary, I look on the right, see her expression,
then look to the left, and both seem almost "irritated!" So you got me wondering what the hell is going on in the background, which rocks.
I think it was a good idea to include the mother and her baby, to me it just helps push the idea of what the hell is going on behind me.
Without her though, the frame would still have a life of its own, from the powerful focus the man draws.
So I would say with or without her, the frame would still really grab my attention, but I like the fact she is in there.
The exposure is just fine, If you poured all the focus on the mans eyes, I think lots of things would change.
I wouldnt start out at the dog, and my eyes would just run around, but since its not, I look for something to focus on,
which I think makes this photo work even more.
Overall it rocks, I love this photo now that i've looked at it more, just what the hell is going on!
Very cool!
The main action is off-screen, so were are left wondering.
A fine, intriguing shot.

They are all fat with hot wifes, praise big people.
You would've got more attention into the man, if you wouldn't have focused so much on the mom and the baby, I mean....a bit more blury would have helped.
I think a 50mm len would have done a great on focusiong just on the man with the Dog.

I think this works well as it is, my eye is drawn straight to the man and dog, then is led through the frame by the woman and baby. Personally the figures are wonderful, though the background is a little messy for my liking.
